Living in Layers

A very popular theme this past year has been the revitalization of ’90s trends. It’s so funny how cyclical fashion can be, now as an emerging adult I have been wearing items very similar to those I wore as a child. This past winter I started to embrace the layering trend. I remember in the late aughts being exposed to this trend through one of my favorite movies Clueless.  During a scene in the movie, Cher wears a black spaghetti strap shirt over a white T-shirt. I remember thinking at the time that is so ugly, who would ever wear that? And yet, here I am a few years later embracing the trend. I think what’s great about the trend is it’s versatility. In this outfit I was able to layer a warmer winter turtleneck under a summery cotton sundress for a transition look. Looking forward to seeing what past looks will be revised soon.

Frankenstein at SF Ballet

Last month I went to see San Francisco Ballet’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Admittedly, I have never read the book and all my impressions of the story were of the green monster variety. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the gothic story paired with the romance of the ballet. Ballet always seems to be based on pushing the physical body and seeing what composes us, while Frankenstein wrestles with how the emotional and conscious sides of humans are developed and furthered.

I love taking inspiration from events when planning out my evening outfits, and this was no exception. I opted for a beautiful tulle skirt with sequined stars and moons embroidered onto it for something reminiscent of a ballerina skirt. Naturally I had to pair the skirt with a delicate pair of metallic ballet flats. To this I added a sophisticated cold shoulder top in the ultimate romantic shade—pink. Of course the drama of the outfit would not be complete without some sparkly earrings!

Far West

One of the trends I have really loved this winter has been velvet. The luxurious fabric just seems to add an unexpected element of elegance to any outfit. One of my favorite variations of this trend has been found in a dress I picked up from Anthropologie on an amazing sale. The dusty rose color is perfect for the romantic tones of late winter. I really like the western style detailing on the bust, it mades it a perfect pairing for booties.
