When the ’90s trends first started returning, I’ll admit I did not welcome them with open arms! To me the moody and simplistic trends of my birth decade have always seemed overly dramatic and ugly. They’re too little return on investment for me.
However, for the past year I have been working for a classic American clothing company which has recently been embracing grunge looks and simplistic styles. Being exposed to this brand identity has definitely had an influence on my style, pushing me out of my comfort zone. While my style used to be very preppy when I first entered college, it has mellowed out as I have become more comfortable in my skin, allowing for me to explore new (or revitalized) trends like grunge.
Of course while embracing a trend, the most important thing for you to do is to hold to your unique self style. So while I may have sold my polos on Poshmark a few seasons ago, I still love embracing girly, classic elements into my outfits. When I took on the grunge trend, I made sure to keep elements of my style alive. I wore a basic staple gray T-shirt with a vintage flannel I stole from my dad wrapped around my waist. To keep the look clean, I added my trusty white converse and for some girly elements I had to pair my tops with a classic A-line navy mini skirt.
