Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cone Halloween Costume

Hello Readers!

I wanted to share with you my Halloween costume this year: a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone! It was a little bit of a random decision, but I’m happy with how it turned out. It was inspired by this blog post and I found it pretty easy to copy adding my own flair with the mint color. I spent no money on this costume, wearing things that I already had in the house which is always a plus!

Here is a quick tutorial of how to copy this costume:

Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Mint dress
  2. Brown paper
  3. Tape
  4. Scissors
  5. Brown pencil and ruler (optional)

I started with the mint chocolate chip dress. For this I just wore a simple mint J.Crew Factory dress from a few years ago. I then cut out some chocolate chips out of construction paper and taped them to the dress. You could also use fabric glue or even hot glue the chips to your dress, I just taped mine since I wanted to wear this dress again for regular occasions.

Next, I made my cone crown. I cut a large triangle out of brown wrapping paper and then added some pieces from a paper bag to the back to add some structure to the cone. I then drew on some criss-cross lines onto the paper to make it look more like an ice cream cone. I used a ruler to try to keep the lines fairly straight, but I definitely wasn’t a perfectionist about this! Then I just rolled it into a cone and stapled it to hold. I added two small pieces of paper off the sides that I then bobby pinned into my hair.

The costume was so easy to make and a big hit this last weekend and I’m glad I did a little DIY costume this year! Have a very happy and safe Halloween!

Sausalito Summer

As summer starts to come to a close, I find myself reaching for my favorite warm weather pieces more and more. We have had record heat here in Northern California the past month, and it is hard to feel excited to wear fall piece when it is still over a hundred degrees outside! While I probably won’t be transitioning into my riding boots and puffer vests anytime soon, I am starting to think about putting away some of my very summery pieces. One fashion rule that I follow very closely is not wearing bright white after Labor Day. Give me an antique white or a winter white in autumn, but for me the bright summer hue has no place in my wardrobe come September.

Since I’ll be packing up these pieces soon, I’ve been trying to get some extra love out of them. I have loved this skirt from the Banana Republic Outlet this summer. The cut outs are very on trend and it’s so easy to pair with things. I paired it with a simple button down and of course my white Jack Rodgers which will also be going away soon. What have you been wearing during the end of the summer?

Weekly Moments

IMG_5214Enjoying some Valentine’s Day chocolates from my mother

This whole week it has seemed that campus had been abuzz with the hype of Valentine’s Day. Clubs are selling goodies, people are planning trips and singles are lamenting. It has been a busy week for me, filled with term paper proposals, midterms, gatherings with friends and helping with the Student Fashion Association’s Valentine’s Day fundraiser. On Valentine’s Day, I like to focus on all of the love I have from the family and friends in my life. Growing up my mom always made Valentine’s Day special. We would have homemade waffles with strawberries for breakfast and exchange gifts over dinner. Now that I’m on my own, I’m starting some new traditions. Hallmarks of this week have been making handmade valentines for my friends, a festive gathering for my student government group and my cousin coming to California for a weekend visit. Here are some highlights from my week.

State of Grace

IMG_2571I recently found myself with some free time during an afternoon in San Francisco. So, I did what any sensible style blogger would do—I acted like a tourist in my own city and took some blog pictured in one of my favorite areas of the city, Union Square. This is one of my go-to outfits during spring. I love this dress and how easy it is to dress up with accessories. Since it’s finally spring, I had to add some mint and lavender jewelry pieces! I toted around my favorite kate spade new york carry-all (perfect for days in the city when I need to bring a lot of things). I wore a pair of chic and comfortable snakeskin flats. The outfit comes together in simple, understated elegance— it puts me in a “State of Grace”.

Saint Valentine’s

048

Winter is undoubtedly my least favorite season. My wardrobe feels very boring and the only colors I wear tend to be dark jewel tones. The typical plethora of local fruits and vegetables (come on, this is California after all) dwindles and includes far too many vegetables of the squash variety. The weather is rainy and it makes my hair frizz. As far as school goes, I find the winter term to be impossibly boring. It lacks the excitement of the new school year that the fall term brings and it doesn’t have the thrill of the close proximity of summer that spring has. Despite all of the dreariness, there is one thing about winter that I absolutely love—all of the holidays! There are few things that I enjoy more than the excuse to be festive! This sweater is definitely a must-have for the whole month of February. I decided to go ultra-girlie and pair it with a dress and sweet accessories. What I Wore Thanksgiving

Screen Shot 2013-11-29 at 8.08.15 AM

Hello Everyone! I hope you all had lovely Thanksgivings and are continuing to enjoy the holiday by relaxing today or taking advantage of the Black Friday sales! I just wanted to do a quick blog post to share with you what I wore to my Thanksgiving festivities yesterday. I bought this dress back in September from Anthropologie and saved it all season to wear for Thanksgiving. I love dresses with delicate lace detailing (To see me wearing a similar style, click here) because they are so feminine. The color was also perfect for Thanksgiving. My love affair with this dress is definitely not ending with Turkey Day, I want to wear it whenever possible for the rest of the season!

Wake Me Up, September

IMG_4635Confession, I find September to be the hardest month for dressing. The transition from summer to fall tends to not be the easiest on my closet. I love this outfit for this time of year, because it bridges the gap between summer and fall trends nicely. The sweater is a fall piece with a cute peter pan collar. This neckline is going to be huge in the fall, but it’s approachable enough to start wearing early on in the season. Another great thing about this outfit is the use of navy. Navy is a classic neutral that does not belong exclusively to any specific season, this makes it perfect for the transition between seasons! Shorts and a sweater is a great mix for September because it combines fall and summer styles into one chic, polished look. I chose the crochet style ballet flats for their continued supply of summer to fall styling. The closed toe ballet flat is typical for fall, but the open crochet detailing brings a bohemian summer element to the shoe.

How have you been dressing in September?
