One of the trends I have really loved this winter has been velvet. The luxurious fabric just seems to add an unexpected element of elegance to any outfit. One of my favorite variations of this trend has been found in a dress I picked up from Anthropologie on an amazing sale. The dusty rose color is perfect for the romantic tones of late winter. I really like the western style detailing on the bust, it mades it a perfect pairing for booties.
Enjoying some Valentine’s Day chocolates from my mother
This whole week it has seemed that campus had been abuzz with the hype of Valentine’s Day. Clubs are selling goodies, people are planning trips and singles are lamenting. It has been a busy week for me, filled with term paper proposals, midterms, gatherings with friends and helping with the Student Fashion Association’s Valentine’s Day fundraiser. On Valentine’s Day, I like to focus on all of the love I have from the family and friends in my life. Growing up my mom always made Valentine’s Day special. We would have homemade waffles with strawberries for breakfast and exchange gifts over dinner. Now that I’m on my own, I’m starting some new traditions. Hallmarks of this week have been making handmade valentines for my friends, a festive gathering for my student government group and my cousin coming to California for a weekend visit. Here are some highlights from my week.
Most people know the famous Woody Allen quote, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” I think the above graphic is a nice take on that idea. I always find myself reminding myself of it whenever I feel unmotivated to … Continue reading →
Shout-out to my girl Kelly Clarkson for this blog post title. Here’s a brief, and very very delayed, look at what I wore during my Fourth of July festivities. I love to keep things festive and dress in my very best red white and blue. I adore the United States shaped necklace I wore. At school I’m an American studies major and I wear this necklace when I have tests or papers due for good luck.
Sorry I haven’t been posting as much lately, I was super busy with the end of the school year. Now that I’m on summer vacation, I’ll try to update the blog more often! Keep checking back for outfits, crafts, recipes and lifestyle tips!
With the days warming up and summer just around the corner, I find myself abandoning my spring florals and frequently opting for my summer staple—stripes! I love the unusual style of this black and white striped dress. Placing stripes of differing sizes on the top and bottom of the dress creates a nice take on the traditional striped sundress. Since it’s black and white, I find the dress incredibly easy to change up! I’ve styled it a different way each time I’ve worn it—I’ve dressed it up with pearls and flats, I’ve worn it to school with a cardigan and a statement necklace, I’ve paired it with a clutch and heels for a date—there are endless possibilities! I love to add a bit of summer flair to the dress by throwing on my jean jacket. I think the cropped jacket works perfectly with the structured dress and it adds just a hint of menswear to the look. To keep things fun, I added a simple mint bangle and metallic gold flats.
This week I’ve been home for spring break. It’s been a relaxing week filled with catching up with old friends, hikes, museum dates with my mom and quality time with my family. Coming home can be such a gift. It grounds you and re-energizes you for the next task ahead. For me that’s a full Spring Quarter with classes, an editing internship, a campus job and a heavy involvement in student government. Thanks to my refreshing week at home, and the pearls of wisdom my parents impart each time I see them, I’m ready to charge ahead! Hope your first weeks of spring have gone well!
Some cool prints found in my room at The Inn at the Presido. I love that they incorporated the eucalyptus that we find everywhere in the Bay Area. I recently found myself with some free time during an afternoon in San Francisco. So, I did what any sensible style blogger would do—I acted like a tourist in my own city and took some blog pictured in one of my favorite areas of the city, Union Square. This is one of my go-to outfits during spring. I love this dress and how easy it is to dress up with accessories. Since it’s finally spring, I had to add some mint and lavender jewelry pieces! I toted around my favorite kate spade new york carry-all (perfect for days in the city when I need to bring a lot of things). I wore a pair of chic and comfortable snakeskin flats. The outfit comes together in simple, understated elegance— it puts me in a “State of Grace”.
I decided to skip the inspiration this Monday and instead celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! As I’m sure is clear by now, I love holidays and St. Patrick’s Day is no exception! My Irish family has some cute traditions for today, and while I’ll still be wearing my very best green dress, I will sadly be missing out on the family stuff since I’m at school. My mother always makes us some kind of green inspired breakfast and then for dinner we have corned beef (well, tofu for me) and cabbage with soda bread. I took the easy way out this morning and ate some Lucky Charms for breakfast (hey it has a leprechaun on the box, it’s totally authentic). I’ll definitely be looking forward to eating some leftover soda bread when I get home for spring break tomorrow! How do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
My blog officially turns two years old today! It’s crazy to think that so much has happened and changed in such a small amount of time. I started The Bow Ho my freshmen year of college when I was feeling kind of lonely. It wasn’t until my second year at college that I really found my place, so the blog was a great creative outlet to have during a difficult time in my life. When I started it, I was so scared of being judged and critiqued for it. I had no idea where the blog would lead me. Through my two years as a blogger, I have undeniably grown. I think having the blog has helped me to strengthen my voice as a writer and define my personal style as a Fashionista. The blog has lead to some amazing opportunities and inspired my next step after graduating college. It was through having this blog that I discovered my dream to be a fashion and lifestyle writer for my career.
A special shout out and thanks to all my readers! Having your support means so much and continues to inspire my work on the blog. A special thanks to my mom who is my most loyal reader and to all of my friends who have suggested outfits, given compliments, taken dorky photos of me and helped out along the way.
